İznik cini Patterns: from drawing to painting

5-week online series with Nagihan Seymour

June 4- July 2 (5 Thursdays) | 1 pm - 3 pm ET

Course fee: $155

Open to all skill levels, ages 16 and up | Recordings will be available

Course Description

In this 5-week online series with Nagihan Seymour, participants will learn to draw and paint Iznik Cini (Ottoman tile) patterns in different styles.

Participants will learn how Iznik designers organized space, such as medallions, repeating fields, and borders in a tile, and how semi-stylized flowers (such as tulips, carnations, saz leaves, rosettes, and palmettes) are organized within the compositions to produce a harmonious, repeating surface that is characteristic of classical Iznik ceramics.

There will be an option for student to share their work with the instructor, who will provide feedback on their progress during the sessions.

What you will learn:

  • Step-by -step guided practice to draw and paint symmetrical patterns.

  • Study historical Iznik examples to understand traditional patterns and how to compose them.

  • Learn to draw Iznik motifs and borders incorporating semi-stylized florals.

  • Compose tile panels with medallion with continous border.

  • Learn to apply Iznik-inspired color palette (cobalt blue, turquoise, bole red, green accents and dark outlines) with layering techniques creating a glazed surface on paper.
